Let’s celebrate National CBD month with interesting facts, and a few quirky stories to hype your knowledge of hemp!
Many people who are just discovering the power of CBD think of it as a bold, new, alternative treatment for a myriad of health conditions. The truth is, CBD comes from the cannabis plant, and cannabis use is centuries old!
At Terrasol, your premier CBD dispensary, we are certified CBD educators. So, let’s shed some light on what CBD is, and where it comes from.
Can You Get High from CBD?
The answer is no. CBD is a compound from the Cannabis Sativa plant, also known as hemp, and it will not get you high. The psychoactive chemical in marijuana that produces euphoria is called THC, and comes from a different strain of cannabis called Indica.
Most Americans Don’t Understand CBD
When you consider the general American population, most people (58%) don’t understand that THC will get you high, and CBD won’t- according to 2021 research by Invisibly, an online, real-time research tool. Narrowing it down further, an even bigger majority of people (68%) who have never used CBD or marijuana aren’t aware of the distinction.
CBD Statistics Reveal its Most Common Uses
When we look at statistics, the most common uses of CBD are rooted in health-related issues. Relief of pain is the most frequent reason people (40%) use CBD. The source comes from a 2019 Gallup poll. The next top reasons people use CBD are relief from insomnia (20%), anxiety (20%) and arthritis (8%).
The Discovery of CBD is Relatively New
Drawing a timeline of history, CBD is a relative newcomer. Its discovery, in a Harvard research lab, goes back to the early 1940’s. CBD’s isolation as a non-psychological treatment is evident in groundbreaking studies from the 1960’s. Mass marketing of CBD oil began in 2005, coinciding with reliable research about its use in treating mood disorders and insomnia. Current research focuses on the use of CBD to treat inflammation, cancer, and epilepsy.
A Royal Twist with Cannabis
Cannabis (in general) has a much longer, and more colorful history that takes us to 2800 BC. It is in the pharmacopoeia, or list of medicines, of Emperor Shen Nung who is considered the Father of Chinese Medicine. You will find its introduction to Western Medicine in the 1840’s, including its use to treat seizures. Some believe Queen Victoria to be a believer in cannabis, using it during her reign in the 1800’s to relieve menstrual cramps.

Even Your Pet Can Find Relief from CBD
CBD is not just for humans, it’s for pets too! Early studies suggest you may be able to help your pet with anxiety, chronic pain, and seizures using CBD. Chews containing CBD for your cat or dog are becoming more widely available. You’ll want to be sure to talk with your veterinarian before giving your pet CBD. Also, make sure to follow dosing recommendations. That said, it’s worth your while to investigate.
